This template warns readers that the information presented in an article may not be the most up-to-date or accurate due to missing/unpublished/uncertain information about a recently deceased person, and that readers should therefore be cautious. This is generally true for all of our articles, but in cases of extraordinary public attention the risk is especially high. As such, '''this template should be used only in cases where many editors (perhaps dozens or more) are editing the article on the same day''', and it should be removed as soon as this editing subsides. '''Do {{red|not}} use it merely to tag the article of a recently deceased person''', as that would defeat the template's purpose.

*The first parameter must be entered to sort biography articles by last name in [[:Category:Recent deaths]]:

*Named parameter "type" overrides the word "person"
<nowiki>{{recent death|type=group}}</nowiki>
*Named parameter "article" overrides the word "a"
<nowiki>{{recent death|article=an|type=ostrich}}</nowiki>
*Named parameter "multiple" should be set to "yes" to substitute "have" for "has", in the event of multiple deaths where pluralization is required
<nowiki>{{recent death|article=two|type=people|multiple=yes}}</nowiki>

When using this template, check the article talk page and change "living=yes" to "living=no" in {{tl|WPBiography}} or similar templates that refer to this person and remove any {{tl|BLP}} template that refers to this person. Also check the body of the article, infoboxes and other templates, and the categories at the end of the article and make the appropriate changes.
